Encouraging the Estonian People To Know Their Status

On May 16th, 2010 Estonia celebrated the International AIDS Memorial Day (IAMD). In Tallinn, Narva, Tartu and Jõhvi candles, laid out in the form of the red ribbon of tolerance, were lit and hundreds of white balloons were launched into the sky, symbolizing the souls of those who have died from AIDS. These activities emphasized the importance of remembrance, but equally important: that people should live in confidence now and for the future.

In addition the Estonian Network of people living with HIV (ENPLWH), the National Institute for Health Development (NIHD), Estonian Business Coalition to Fight AIDS and International AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) carried out rapid HIV testing in the capital of Estonia,Tallinn, and in the largest city of North-East Estonia, Narva.

Since 2009 the Estonian Network of people living with HIV and its partners has advocated the introduction of rapid HIV testing. Restrictions on the legislative level, however, still exit in providing wide-spread access to this service. All parlimentarians as well as key ministers received, ahead of time, a personal invitation to show their support and come out with the rest of its citizens to be tested. On Sunday in Tallinn and in Narva, neither parliamentarians nor any of the ministers who had been invited came out to be tested.

Those who presented for testing were those usually found at such events: the everyday people of Estonia, who during this time, as in December 2009, stood in queues to find out their HIV-status.The results revealed the following: 404 tested in Tallinn with 10 positive results (2.5%) and 243 were tested in Narva with 16 positive results (6.6%). The UNAIDS prevalence rate in Estonia is 1.3%.

The results clearly shows the importance of getting tested and beginning treatment if needed, and to make these services available country-wide. On May 24th the campagin starts. The goal of this campaign: to inspire the population to test for HIV. In order to acheive this, at the beginning of June, 2010 most major cities in Estonia will offer rapid HIV testing.

DSCF8713The Estonian Network of People Living with HIV has been extremely busy with preparations for World AIDS Day. The organization celebrated December 1st with a public event which included  free rapid testing in Tamssare Park in the centre of Tallin. Thanks to their efforts, in just two days 333 people accessed free testing at this location alone. Local activists and volunteers then proceeded to a candle lightening event in front of Merimetsa General Hospital. Finally, the Network co-organized a show on Estonian National TV ETV1 which included a picture story on living with HIV, with a focus on stigma and discrimination issues in Estonia.  Congratulations for their hard work and recent successes!

Estonia-2009Since its creation in 2005, the core mission of the Estonian Network of People Living with HIV has been to improve the quality of life of people living with HIV. Towards that goal, the network provides psychological and social support, counseling, legal aid, and diagnostics for people living with HIV. Operating from Tallin, the network advocates for an improved access to medicine and treatment for people living with HIV, and lobbies for protecting and promoting their rights. Its target groups encompass vulnerable and hard to reach populations such as HIV positive men and women, pregnant women and infants, male and female injecting drug users, men who have sex with men, and persons in prisons. The Estonian Network of People living with HIV also gathers, analyzes, and publishes relevant data and communicates effectively with the media.
