SANERELA + - South Africa

SANERELA+, the South African Network of Religious Leaders Living with or Personally Affected by HIV or AIDS, is active in nine provinces to support leaders from a variety of denominations, including traditional spiritual leaders and healers. Most of the members of the organization are open about their status, and all actively engage with their congregations to bring an end to stigma and discrimination against people living with HIV. The organization supports female religious leaders affected by HIV, and makes particular efforts towards women and young girls. SANERELA+ organizes workshops to keep religious leaders abreast of the development and consequences of the epidemic. This helps them become role models who can guide their communities through the process of living and change associated with HIV, and educate them about strategies to mitigate the impact of the epidemic and the stigma surrounding people living with HIV.
