Celebrating Community Leadership and Action On AIDS
YouthRISE
kehpca_logoYouthRISE (Nigeria)is a youth led organization working with people who use drugs to prevent HIV infection and other infectious diseases among its community members. It provides access to HIV services, treatment and care for people who use drugs through the implementation of tailored services to the need of the target population.

Introduction

YouthRISE Nigeria is a community based youth-led organization that was formally founded in 2012. The organization started in 2010 with the coming together of young people who felt that the government was not doing enough to address HIV infection driven by both injecting and non-injecting drug use in Nigeria. Therefore the organization was created as there was a need felt by young people to address HIV service needs and to create enabling environments for service provision for those who use drugs. YouthRISE is now reaching out to over 2000 injecting drug users in the federal capital territory with HIV prevention services. These services include harm reduction interventions, condoms and lubricants distribution, STI management, and provision of mobile HIV and counseling.

Successes

  • YouthRISE Nigeria was recognized in 2014 when the country began preparation for community engagement towards the development of a concept note for submission to the Global Fund under the New Funding Model. A stakeholders’ meeting was convened and a decision was reached to set up a team that will lead consultation process among key populations.
  • Youth RISE Nigeria was able to set up state networks in eight states of the Nigerian Federation also with support of UNDOC and National Agency for the Control of AIDS. This was a huge success and the networking meetings have created a platform for community members to network among themselves and refer their peers for uptake for HIV services without fear of getting arrested.
