Introduction

The « Réseau national des jeunes vivant avec le VIH » (RNJ+) organization was founded in 2004. It has a network of 420 young people living with HIV. Its primary focus is working with and on behalf of young people living with HIV and young people from key populations. RNJ+ has a mission to involve young people living with HIV in the HIV response and to ensure that young people living with HIV become key actors in the HIV national response. Since 2004, RNJ+ has reached over 20,000 young people through peer education and community outreach programming aimed at raising awareness around HIV. In 11 short years, RNJ+ has cultivated a dynamic network and launched a variety of projects creatively designed to address the needs of specific populations all aimed at promoting the SRHR of young people through youth leadership. In the face of mounting instability, RNJ+ has displayed tremendous courage and dedication to its mission and community, continuing to serve the SRHR of young people in Burundi.

Successes

  • Through partnership with ABS (the Burundian national network of AIDS and service organizations), RNJ+ opened a youth center in Bujumbura, providing sexual and reproductive services to young people living with HIV and also giving particular attention to young people from key populations (people who identify as LGBTI), people who engage in sex work, and young people living with HIV.
  • Currently, RNJ+ sits on the Burundi Country Coordination Mechanism of the Global Fund as the representative of people living with HIV, amplifying the voices of youth leaders and young people from marginalized groups. Through its partnerships and focus on advocacy, RNJ+ has supported several of its members to participate in local, regional and global advocacy work around the rights of young people living with and affected by HIV
    • RNJ+’s greatest accomplishment has been its ability to bring together young people living with HIV and equip them with the skills to become key actors in the HIV response in the face of heavy discrimination against people living with HIV.
