SPIN Plus - Tajikistan

Introduction

SPIN Plus was started by a group of HIV-positive people who inject drugs in Tajikistan, a country characterized by a high rate of drug use and restrictive policies towards people who use drugs. SPIN Plus’ members were the first to publicly announce their HIV-positive status and to lobby the government to make available antiretroviral treatment to this vulnerable group. The organisation provides innovative and peer-based services to people who use drugs and people living with HIV in Tajikistan. In a span of three years, SPIN Plus has been able to achieve nationwide recognition. The organisation has participated in a national survey to define the national level of stigma and discrimination towards people living with HIV. Functioning in a difficult environment, the organisation is a leader and a pioneer in the field of community organising with people who inject drugs and in the area of service delivery to people who inject drugs, including those who are HIV-positive, as well as in advocating for the rights of these vulnerable populations, particularly HIV-positive women. Located in the capital city of Dushanbe, SPIN Plus also provides much needed support through consultations and assistance with client management for less experienced and more remotely located organisations.
