Elan d’Amour - Côte d’Ivoire

Serving the community around the port of San Pedro since 2008, Elan d’Amour is a grassroots organisation that supports people living with HIV by empowering them and involving them in HIV prevention, care and treatment programmes. Because of its innovative collaboration with local health-care structures, including the regional hospital, the organisation has quickly become a model for other communities whose aim is to empower people living with HIV and to reduce stigma. Elan d’Amour builds the skills of people living with HIV and trains them to counsel others in HIV care. It also effectively overcomes stigma among health-care providers, providing training in counselling, testing and treatment-adherence support. In 2009 Elan D’Amour supported five health centres by providing HIV treatment education to over 900 people living with HIV and offering counselling and testing for HIV to 1,600 people, with particular focus on reaching out to sex workers in the community. Furthermore, the organisation focuses on advocating for care and treatment for mothers and children living with HIV. Elan d'Amour has played a catalytic role in becoming a model for integrating community organisations into the system of care for HIV in developing countries.
