Introduction

The Productive Organisation for Women in Action is (POWA) a community-based organisation composed of a broad cross-section of women: single, married, household heads, employed, unemployed, and women whose work is not recognised or remunerated. These women came together to collectively respond to the rapidly escalating incidence of HIV in their communities and to the increasing impact of the epidemic on women. POWA’s members have received training as peer educators and work through education and advocacy campaigns on HIV and sexually transmitted infections prevention, sexual reproductive health, human rights, gender-based violence, sexual abuse and exploitation, gender equality, and stigma and discrimination. These campaigns reach out to the overall community through door-to-door visits and innovative “satellite carts and tables,” where menus offer referral services, condom demonstrations, HIV testing and support of people living with HIV, among other services. POWA empowers women and communities to take control of their own sexual and reproductive health and provides them with marketable skills in jewellery-making and other crafts so that members of POWA are empowered to serve their community based on the confidence they gain.
