091201_074 "I am pleased by the emphasis this year on upholding human rights," said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. "Previous Red Ribbon honorees are an example to us all on how to act with dignity in the face of adversity. The work of community-based organizations will be more effective if not hampered by discrimination against people living with HIV and populations most at risk, including sex workers, drug users and men who have sex with men." "I am proud to be part of this initiative. The award winners are small organizations, with limited resources at their disposal, yet they do outstanding work that will now be recognized globally. The efforts of these community organizations may seem like they create tiny sparks. Together, however, these sparks provide a vibrant light" said UNAIDS Goodwill Ambassador Naomi Watts, when attending a World AIDS Day event in NY and officially launching the call for nominations.
