VILLAGE OF HOPE-RWANDA WOMEN NETWORK – RWANDA

The Village of Hope emerged in Rwanda as a community development initiative. It was constructed in 1999-2000 to serve women who were victims of rape and other violent crimes during the genocide. The Centre, completed in 2002, provides services and housing to 120 residents, 1,000 women and 200 young people from surrounding communities. The services offered include medical care, support, trauma counseling, education and awareness. These services are open to all with an emphasis on women living with HIV. A full 50% of the women in the program fall within this group. Many volunteers in the Village carry out home visits and provide home care to people living with HIV.
