MAPILELO PROJECT – NAMIBIA

The Mapilelo Project offers psychological support to those living with HIV as well as operating a local health clinic and providing home-based care. The project focuses on gender issues – working to teach women and children crucial life skills. These skills not only reduce their rate of infection but also enable them to better care for themselves. The program works to reduce the misconceptions around people living with HIV and towards prevention of the virus. They also provide access to food and nutrition. Expanding beyond Namibia, the program is also being implemented in Botswana, Lesotho, South Africa and Swaziland. The Mapilelo Project works to reduce HIV/AIDS morbidity and mortality through Prevention from Mother-to-Child Transmission (PMTCT) and Highly Active Anti-retroviral Therapy (HAART) administered to people living with HIV at the Katima Mulilo State Hospital.
